Windmills & Holland

Holland and windmills. They just belong to eachother... There are a few places in Holland where you have many windmills in the same village. The pictures here where taken in Zaanse Schans, a beautiful pitoresk town nearby Amsterdam. The oldest windmill was build around the year 1700.

Dutch coast at Walcheren

 

Holland has a really great coast with kilometers of pure sand beaches. Walcheren, which used to be an island in the old days, offers beaches with a lot of wooden pilars. Those pilars are protecting the sand dunes and keeping the sand on it's place.
The funny looking tower used to be an old church, but the church was destroyed long time ago. The tower remained and they decided to build a lighthouse on top of the old church tower. The result looks quite bizar.

Bicycles in Amsterdam

 

 

 

It is known that  Dutch people cycle a lot. But when you walk around the central railway station in Amsterdam, you see just bicycles everywhere. And I mean everywhere. Thousands of them.

Old barn

Many of the old Finnish farmhouses are made out of thick wood. When you have the time it's worth looking to those details, they can be really fascinating.

Another winter abstract

Often people don't understand abstract pictures, but sometimes it's just fun to take them. If it's not your cup of tea, please don't waste your time and look to something else. :)

Luckily the Finnish winter is so long...

Most people don't agree with this, but when you love taking pictures, the winter is just a great season to go out and shoot! And when the season is long you have more chance to catch a great moment.

Lovely winter

The first pictures was again taken on a day with very cold temperatures of -20 degrees C. Due to this
extreme cold temperature the sea water was steaming. The sun was going down and gave a a beautiful light on the dark snow clouds.
The cars with loads of snow on them were like a piece of art. Not sure if their owners were so happy to see
this...

Ice sculpture

Water of a river has made a beautiful ice sculpture. The water is dropping some 3 - 4 meters and forming
different shapes of ice. With very cold temperatures the layers of ice are getting thicker and thicker all the time.

Mysterious house

The water of this small river was steaming when the temperature outside was -24 degrees,
It gave a bit of a mysterious feeling.

Ice breaker in action

This small icebreaker is trying to keep the sea open. The sea looks more like a huge cream pie on the moment.

Milk drops

As I told in the posting before, we did the same experiment also with milk.
Milk and water behaves a little bit different. Milk is a bit thicker then water.
The drops you get are not so exciting as with water. You could almost can say that you get "lazy" drops. But still, the effect is nice.

Water drops

One week ago we did some experiment with two other photographer friends.
We wanted to make pictures from water drops and also some with milk drops.
After building the setup we started to shoot and were hoping to be lucky to catch some drops. You have to try quite many times before you manage to catch them. It's quite nice to see the different shapes of the drops.

More cold days

The winter continues in Finland. This kind of cold weather we have normally in January. Let's see if those scientists from Poland will be right, they said a few months ago that Finland will get the coldest winter ever.....

Islands of ice

Close to our home the river is starting to freeze. On this place the water is floating rapidly and keeps the river partly ice free. Small islands of ice are formed around rocks in the river.
